Master of Research (MRes) studentships in Statistics

School of Mathematics, University of Bristol
    Job Description:

The statistics group at the University of Bristol invites strong candidates to apply for the MRes in Statistics. We have funding to support several exceptional candidates.

The Statistics Group, within the School of Mathematics, University of Bristol, is one of the largest groups in UK and a research centre of international excellence. The MRes in Statistics is a full one-year taught postgraduate programme, consisting of two semesters of coursework followed by a substantial project dissertation. It is designed to provide high quality postgraduate training in the methods and practice of research, serving as an enhanced route to a PhD or as a qualification for entry to a research career in industry.

The Statistics Group offers full MRes studentships (including fees and tax-free stipend of approximately £13,590 per year) for UK students and EU students who have been residents in the UK for 3 years prior to application, and fees-only funding for other EU students. Worldwide applicants are also encouraged to apply, but must be able to self-fund their study. Strong candidates can compete for PhD funding in later years.

The entry requirement is the equivalent of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours at undergraduate level, in Maths or a related subject. Please consult the Statistics Group’s handbook, for more details, and contact the Statistics PG Admission Tutor, Dr. Li Chen (li.chen@bristol.ac.uk) with any further questions, including qualifications and eligibility for funding. Applications should be made online at . Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; funding will be allocated throughout the year and late applications may be disadvantaged.

Increasingly, developers make use of mathematical models, advanced simulations, and sophisticated (computer) computations. With this program you can for example develop new and innovative technologies

You can specialize in three fields in the Master’s degree program in Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The Computational Science and Engineering track focuses primarily on technology, Discrete Mathematics and Applications involves the mathematics of our digital world, while the Statistics, Probability, and Operations Research track concentrates mainly on business processes.
As a graduate of the Master’s program in Industrial and Applied Mathematics, you will have gained a thorough knowledge of mathematical modeling. You will also have developed skills to tackle technological and industrial problems. For example, the analysis of large databases in communication and information technology, and the improvement of weather forecasts. Or models as used in
telecommunications and physics, queuing theory or optimization. There is a great demand for graduates of this Master’s program, not only in the high-tech industry but also in other industrial fields and at (semi-)governmental agencies. You will be able to find employment as a researcher, consultant or developer.

The program aims to train students to become professional applied mathematicians who are able to do research in a specific field of applied mathematics, depending on the specialization chosen; apply and develop mathematical methods and computational skills to solve industrial and engineering problems; communicate on an academic level in an industrial, social and multi-disciplinary environment.

    instruction modes
In the first year you focus on expanding your subject knowledge, mainly with application-oriented subjects of general interest and from the field chosen by you. During the modeling week in the fall you spend lots of time on mathematical modeling with fellow students. Two-thirds of the first year consists of mandatory subjects, which depend on the chosen field. There is also a wide range of electives, covering about one third of the first year.

    sustainable strengthening
Next to the scientific skills and knowledge and experience with high-tech technology, the student gains a broad network of academics from all over the world, due to the wide range of origin of the participating masterstudents, teaching staff and collaborating companies, which can be of great interest for the organization.
